That programme devised for the occasion around the Nativity story is devoted to short works of art selected from MAC’s work. He and Lully were very close to Louis XIV who was amazed by his art.
Sacred hymns and instrumental pieces celebrate Christmas, cherished by late seventeenth-century composers.
Christmas carols for instruments show the delicious innocence of popular tradition.
The shepherds’ flutes join the violins to play popular melodies, those well-known “timbres” adorned with refined writing.
Vocal pieces on a Latin prosody are more solemn and liturgical in character while retaining the tenderness and freshness of Christmas.
